So why have I chosen such variation in the shutter speed? It all comes down to light. Night photography doesn’t mean that you will have no lights to work with. There are actually some city night shots where there is so much light. When you have the light from traffic lights, cars, street lights and buildings, 30 seconds can be too much. It’s funny to think that lowlight photography can suffer from overexposure sometimes.

If you’re not sure about what shutter speed to use recommend exposure bracketing. Have you heard of this before? This is how you do it; go to your camera’s menu setting and put your camera in auto bracketing mode. Position your internal light meter where you have good exposure. You will find that in this mode the camera will take three shots. The first photo will be underexposed, the second photo will be exposed properly in the third photograph will be overexposed.

Exposure bracketing can actually surprise you. I have been surprised to see that sometimes the photograph that was supposed to be too bright or too dark ended up being perfectly exposed. This is why it’s important to experiment and try different things with the auto bracketing method.
